I have lost faith of M. Night Shyamalan ever since I saw The Last Airbender. The film was bland, boring and literally mocked the fans of the original cartoon. But considering that Will Smith wants to give his boy a little moment in the sunshine for their next big film, will this film be the father-son duo we always wanted or will it be another cash grab that will insult the fans of Shyamalan's previous films like The Sixth Sense of Signs? Well I am oh so happy to say that After Earth is an ABYSMAL film!
This film takes place in a post apocalyptic future where Earth is now inhabited by these animals that have evolved to kill humans. Humanity no longer exists on this planet and we all now live on this ship called the Nova Prime. After one fatal crash landing, Will and Jaden are now stranded on earth with very little means of survival. Will Smith's legs are broken so it's up to his son to travel miles to retrieve this beacon that will take them home safe and sound.
Take one wild guess why I despise this film. For the majority of the film you are stuck with Will and Jaden. Having a film focusing on those two alone can get really boring after a while. This film is incredibly tedious and there were many points when I was begging this film to end. But it never seemed to happen. Very little happens in its run time and the film suffers because of it. Will Smith puts on possibly the most boring performance I have ever seen! No emotion comes out of him and for some reason he seems perfectly calm that he is stranded on a now deadly planet and that HE IS MAKING HIS SON RISK HIS LIFE TO RETRIEVE THE MEANS FOR THEM TO GET BACK HOME! This is quite possibly the worst parenting I have ever seen in a film! Jaden Smith while better doesn't really give out anything spectacular either. Just like his father, he doesn't really show any emotion and I find him personally really annoying at times. And while I did survive through this film till the very end, I still really wish that I just stopped watching it part way through.
Verdict: 1/5. Will Smith, Jaden Smith, I love you guys but you really made a mistake with this. After Earth is an atrocious film with barely any cast, an incredibly boring plot, awfully tedious pacing and a very weak ending. M. Night Shyamalan, until you make good films that you used to, I won't be touching any more of your films. That was 1 hour and 40 minutes of my life that I am never getting back!
