I did not watch this film in FilmClub. However, I think this movie is just too good to be ignored.
The Directors of Despicable Me have a way with words that will soften even the hardest of hearts.
Gru, the main character of this blockbuster, has a choice to carry on with his horrific super-villain deeds or adopt three children by the names of Margo, Edith and Agnes from an orphanage with a matron called Miss Hattie who treats them like trash. But the storyline is not that simple. He has to outwit a villain called Vector Perkins, who is too clever and cunning to kill off until about eighty-five minutes in.
But, are we forgetting something? The yellow dudes who can't resist dressing up? Gru must have a hard time dealing with the Minions. They are absent-minded, immature, rowdy and blatantly useless. On the other hand, they are humourous, lovable, peculiar and faithful. We as humans decided that the latter reason was what we were going to take them for. Now, everywhere we go, there is something to do with Minions. They are probably more popular than some big names in pop. We aren't worshipping them yet, per se, but NOT YET.
The Despicable Me franchise is so popular that it is sold in most countries and most languages worldwide. Not forgetting all of its wonderful merchandise, including plush minions, talking minions, talking Agnes, even the unicorn from the 'It's So Fluffy' skit.
This film teaches you how love can overcome greed and selfishness and how doing the right thing for the right reasons can be a reward in itself.
Despicable Me is probably my third favourite film of all time. Topping all that, just when I thought they couldn't get any better, Despicable Me 2 came out, and I reconsidered. Despicable Me 2 is, without a doubt, my favourite film out of everything I have watched, and I cannot wait until many more sequels and merchandise are released. Both films are a must-have for all of the family, and that is why I am presenting Despicable Me an outstanding five stars.
