The Ipcress File (1965)

The Ipcress File is a welcome break from such juvenile spy thrillers as the James Bond series. Welcome to the real, dour, chilling world of espionage. The events in this film are portrayed with such incredible realism. The characters are likable, especially the cool-as-ice Harry Palmer and his associate, Dalby. A distinctly British flavor runs through the film and the story is so believable that the Bond franchise pales before this stylish film.

Len Deighton, the writer of the book was himself a worker for the secret service, so he created his brilliant book with intensity and panache unlike Ian Fleming who idealized the world of espionage . A subtle love story blends in with the frighteningly authentic plot, and the bravura set pieces complete this film, which is a welcome entry into the great pantheon of spy thrillers.

Michael Caine's performance is smart, cool and compelling and is similar to his performance in the landmark gangster film, Get Carter. The film's climax is truly horrifying and dark. The imagery was revolutionary at the time, with animated hallucinations like those found in James Stewart's dream in Vertigo. A truly recommended film and a very original cinematic experience.
