'Atonement' is abysmal. Even that use of pointless alliteration was more interesting than Joe Wright's disaster. I decided to watch the film as I had thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, the film adaptation lacked all that was interesting in McEwan's novel. And if you hadn't read the book the film would of made about as much sense as Clint Eastwood's speech about Mitt Romney. The details about interpretation and storytelling were basicly untouched till the end, and even then it is dealt with in a boring manner, this meant that 'Atonement' was nothing more than another romantic period drama. The unoriginal style and annoying soundtrack where a typewriter is used as an instrument create an extremely tedious feel to the movie. Romola Gorai who plays Briony failed to perform the riveting character that McEwan created. In fact her only facial expression is an unhappy one... an expression not too dissimilar to mine as I sat on my sofa waiting for the film to end. If I was to compliment the film , it would be for one shot only, the Dunkirk evacuation. This two minute shot contrasts everything that i have said in this review, with a style that mirrors Steve Mcqueen, Joe Wright films the devastating scene in WW2. Anarchy and despair is all captured with an artistic eye and the instrumental music (without the annoying typewriter) creates a memorable tone. Unfortunately 'Atonement' fails to grip me during the rest of the 2 hour film thus making it abysmal, as previously stated.
