Whether documentary or elaborate hoax (likely the latter), Banksy's film has more depth and calculation than any thriller or mystery in recent memory, and certainly for 2010. I enjoyed it the first time, but upon repeat viewings, the film truly begins to peel its layers and reveal the scope of what has actually been accomplished. It's a puzzle, a prank, and a sorry statement on consumerism in the art world that deserves a very close look. The scope of the film is grand on a shoestring budget, and Banksy manages to construct and deconstruct an entire market in one brilliant play. The end result is closer in comparison to one of Space Invader's disassembled Rubik's cubes than any other documentary. Yet another landmark documentary to be held in the same regard and disregard for convention as Hoop Dreams, Capturing the Friedmans and Murderball.
