This film takes a wry look at some of the key events and characters of the Old West through the eyes of one man. The legendary Dustin Hoffman stars as Jack Crabb, who looks back on a long and incredible life that includes being adopted by the Cheyenne tribe, a spell as a gunfighter, befriending Wild Bill Hickock and witnessing the disastrous Battle of the Little Bighorn. Unlike many westerns of the 1940s and 50s, this tale is critical of the US Cavalry's treatment of the Native Americans - who are depicted in a refreshingly unpatronising manner.
At the height of the depression, orphan Little Tree moves in with his Grandparents, learning valuable lessons about his Cherokee heritage.
