War isn't just about physical combat - it also has a profound psychological and spiritual impact. This star-filled World War II drama delivers a haunting meditation on the hell of conflict, charting the experiences of a US army platoon struggling against Japanese forces on the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal. Events are shown from a cross-section of perspectives, from the non-conformist Private Witt to the power-hungry Lieutenant Colonel Tall. The bloody action is secondary to the soldiers' internal conflict, as they fight to preserve not only their lives but also their sanity.
This film has a couple of uses of strong bad language and contains war violence.
