The first Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar, Mother India is a portrait of hardworking wife and mother Radha, and the village community where she lives. When her husband abandons her Radha must bring up her children, look after her farm and defend her honour all by herself. Mother India is told in flashback as the old Radha remembers her life and features some fantastic musical set pieces. The film explores ideas of patriotism, tradition, families, love and loyalty - all extremely topical at a time when India was establishing itself as a new state.
Based on the true story of a sassy single mother working as an assistant at a law firm, who discovers a firm's water pollution is making locals ill.
