Synopsis

In this short wartime thriller, a young Scottish RAF sergeant recounts the tale of his escape from German-occupied France. After being gunned down by the Nazis, John Dougall is assisted by another prisoner of war and members of the French Resistance to gain safe passage to England. But not everyone is who they claim to be, as spies double cross each other and spread misinformation in an elaborate plot that only the Allies are cunning enough to uncover. British filmmaker of Hollywood fame Alfred Hitchcock was commissioned to make this short film by the Ministry of Information in London, while World War Two was still being fought. The film stars a cast of refugee actors and, as a piece of French-language propaganda, aimed to boost the morale of people in liberated France. The distinctive cinematic style and Kafkaesque themes of Hitchcock’s later work are also identifiable in this rarely-seen archive film.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
