Synopsis

This beautifully crafted stop-motion animation transposes the story of Pinocchio to 1930s Italy, amidst the rise of fascism. Woodcarver Geppetto lives a happy life with his young son, until the tragic day when the town’s church is bombed by fighter pilots and Geppetto is left on his own, bereft. Then one day, his wooden puppet Pinocchio is brought to life by a magical fairy. Though at first Geppetto is reluctant to think of Pinocchio as his son, they start to become closer. The puppet is as lively, cheeky and sensitive as a real boy. But the threat of war is looming, and a high-ranking army official interprets Pinocchio as a weapon of war, while a circus owner has a different future in mind for the puppet. Sensitively handling topics such as ethics, grief, and growing up, the darker tones of this literary adaptation are complemented by moments of humour and pathos.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
