Synopsis

In this documentary, Martin Scorsese presents and narrates the careers of iconic British filmmaking duo, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Both men were born in the early years of the 20th century: Powell in Kent, England and Pressburger in modern-day Hungary before leaving mainland Europe during Nazi reign in 1935 where he teamed up with Michael Powell just a few years later to form their illustrious partnership. Over the next decade they would go on to make some of the all-time great films, including The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948). These films and others are explored in detail by Scorsese as he examines what makes them so memorable and how they have influenced other filmmakers, including himself, over the decades since. With perceptive insight and analysis from one of modern cinema’s finest filmmakers combined with archive footage and extended clips from their movies, this documentary is a must for students of film.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
