This documentary tells the story of superhero culture on screen and in wider society from the origins of rivals DC and Marvel Comics in the 1930s through to the present day. Despite the popularity of these caped crusaders with alter egos and formidable enemies, it wasn’t until 1978 that they made their way to the big screen with ‘Superman’ where audiences were stunned by the spectacle. After the success of this franchise followed by Tim Burton’s series of ‘Batman’ films throughout the 1990s – which became a sensation outside of the cinema through toys and other merchandise – superheroes have become synonymous with blockbuster filmmaking. Highlighting key titles around the turn of the millennium including ‘X-Men’, ‘Blade’, and ‘Spider-Man’ through to the formation and expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is an accessible and informative documentary containing valuable insights from contributors in the film industry.
