Considered one of the most powerful British plays about the Holocaust, Cecil Philip Taylor’s 1981 drama tells the story of John Halder, a liberal-minded academic living in Frankfurt in the early 1930s. He and his best friend, a Jewish psychiatrist, discuss the political climate in sceptical and dismissive tones. But with anti-Semitism on the rise, Halder feels the pressure to step in line with the Nazi agenda or risk his career. The professor’s morality is further tested through his loyalty to his wife. Slowly, and with chilling detachment, Halder begins to rationalise away his reservations about the Final Solution. David Tennant takes the lead role in this stage production by the National Theatre, with only two other actors playing all the other parts. This dynamic creates a highly intense atmosphere that challenges audiences to question how resistant intelligent ‘good’ people are to the incremental rise of a populist movement.
