Synopsis

Ruby Gillman is a sixteen-year-old Kraken who, along with her family of fellow krakens, have been masquerading as human beings in the town of Oceanside. Ordered by her mother to avoid going into the ocean at all costs, Ruby nevertheless jumps in to save her crush who she was about to ask to Prom. This sets off a chain of events that sees Ruby meeting her Grandmama and learning that she is next in line to take the throne of a legendary family of sea krakens, mythical, fearsome beasts who rule the seas. Despite her lofty destiny, Ruby is also desperate to fit in at her high school but learns of the war that has been fought between Krakens and Mermaids for centuries. The last thing she needs right now is to find out that the new girl just so happens to be a mermaid. This colourful adventure celebrates the spirit of youthful independence and offers a new angle on the coming-of-age story.

The film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
