In rural Belgium, 13-year-olds Leo and Remi are best friends with a close affection for each other. The pair do everything together: playing games on their own, helping Leo’s family with their agricultural work on a flower farm, and even sleeping in the same bed. Neither boy thinks anything of this intimate relationship until they start middle school where they are questioned by a few of their female classmates who ask if the two are a couple, while other boys direct homophobic slurs in their direction. While Remi appears to be mostly unaffected by these actions, Leo becomes visibly distressed and without warning puts distance between himself and his former best friend. Subsequently the boys must navigate this new and unknown landscape as best they can and figure out how life looks on the other side of their friendship. ‘Close’ is a tender and moving coming-of-age drama which deals with themes including friendship, mental health, and sexuality.
This contemporary fable tells the story of two boys, shunned by their community, who resort to collecting scrap metal for a shady local dealer.
