Commissioned by York St John University’s Cinema and Social Justice project, this short film explores historical moments of rising costs, austerity, and poverty in the UK, prompting its viewer to reflect on today’s economic insecurity being experienced by many. Archive footage filmed between the 1940s and the 1980s is accompanied by a chorus of voices from the public who share how difficult living conditions, insufficient jobs and rising prices affect every area of their lives. The film also includes footage of communities coming together to rally and fight for a more equal and supportive society. This is an accessible and timely short that demonstrates how archive film can elicit reflections on our present day.
