The National Theatre brings Shakespeare’s romantic comedy into a sumptuously jazzy era in this filmed stage performance. Hero and her cousin Beatrice couldn’t be more different: Hero is sweet and demure while Beatrice is witty and bold, but the cousins live happily together in the family-run pastel-coloured hotel in Sicily. When a platoon of soldiers comes to stay, Beatrice finds herself face-to-face with her playful nemesis Benedick, a bachelor who can dish out just as much mocking banter as she can. Fellow soldier Claudio is instantly love-struck by Hero, and as two prepare to marry, everyone at the hotel pitches in to trick Benedick and Beatrice into admitting that there are true tender feelings beneath their “merry war”. With slapstick comedy, perfectly timed punchlines, and glitzy musical numbers this highly accessible Shakespeare adaptation brings the excitement of the stage to life.
Barbados-set modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' as a Caribbean wedding soon goes awry.
