Synopsis

In 1970s London, 12-year-old Kingsley dreams of becoming an astronaut. But he is singled out in school for being disruptive and sent to a school for children with special educational needs. It quickly becomes apparent that Kingsley doesn’t belong with classmates who have more acute learning difficulties. With the help of an educational psychologist and activist, Kingsley’s mum learns that there is racial bias within the system preventing Black children from receiving the same level of education as their white counterparts, and the two work together to challenge it. The final installment of the Small Axe series is a highly personal one for Steve McQueen who partly based Education on his own experiences of discrimination at secondary school.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
