17-year-old AJ is mortified at the thought of having to spend time with her family at a Dorset holiday camp. Not only does she look different from them, in her orange-tinted glasses and bucket hat, but her family don’t seem to understand her passion for environmentalism or sexuality and gender expression, with her mum continuing to call her April. One day at the pool with her little sister she meets Isla, one of the young lifeguards. The two fall for each other, prompting AJ to reflect on her identity and way of seeing the world. This humorous coming of age story is an authentic look at the struggles that come with growing into an adult and the frictions that can occur amongst family whilst also acting as a welcome addition to the recent group of films about young queer characters whose sexuality does not dictate the plot.
