This fourth entry in the popular Snow Queen franchise from Russia reintroduces us to Gerda, a smart and capable young woman who has just moved to a new province with her family of magicians. Gerda is still understanding her own powers but makes up for it by being brave, kind and honest. When King Harald, a great inventor and leader of the province, bans magic and imprisons all the magicians in the Mirrorlands, Gerda must seek help from the local trolls and pirates as well as an old foe, the mysterious Snow Queen. Based on the 1844 tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, this chilly but energetic animation deals with complicated themes such as prejudice and reconciliation in a sweet and accessible manner for younger audiences.
