After the economic recession of 2011, Fern is struggling to find work. After a brief stint at a warehouse for a large online retailer, she moves along. Sleeping in her van in the cold weather which – despite its issues – she refuses to replace as it clearly holds dear memories of her husband, Fern joins a community of nomads. Together they seek work, money and other opportunities, living in the rural west and looking after one another despite the scorn of traditional society. ‘Nomadland’ is a meditative drama which explores topics around loss, community, and connecting with nature, and won Best Picture at the 2021 Academy Awards.
