Synopsis

As a staunch critic of President Gabriel González Videla and his administration in 1948, Chilean poet and Communist Senator Pablo Neruda uses his speech at the National Congress to denounce them. Consequently – despite his respected status – Neruda is threatened with arrest and must live as a fugitive. However, he decides to play games with the authorities, continuing to live his lavish life and making public appearances to spite those in pursuit, most notably the state’s chief police investigator Óscar Peluchonneau. The film is a playful, meta take on the biopic as well as a formally daring deconstruction of storytelling itself, using Neruda’s life as the starting point.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
