Handyman Lee Chandler is living in Boston doing odd jobs, drinking too much and getting into bar-room scuffles. When his older brother dies very suddenly, Lee is forced to return to his hometown in order to take care of funeral arrangements and – to his surprise – take over as legal guardian to his teenage nephew Patrick. Despite the protests of Patrick, who is desperate to remain with his friends, Lee is adamant that they return to Boston as soon as possible. But as time draws on, it becomes increasingly clear that Lee will have to confront the past that haunts him in Manchester-by-the-Sea, even if that involves coming to terms with the most painful grief imaginable. This drama deals with difficult human emotions beautifully and elegantly, finding space for humour amongst the darkness.
Very strong language, theme of bereavement throughout.
