Ken Loach is one of the most celebrated and controversial filmmakers in British cinema, known for his unflinching and heartfelt portrayal of marginalized lives in the modern world. This documentary offers an intimate look at the director’s life, tracing his early days as a director of BBC dramas in the 1960s, through to his ground-breaking works such as Kes and The Wind That Shakes the Barley, and into his continued commitment to addressing pressing societal issues through the lens of storytelling. Actors and collaborators describe the transformative authenticity that Loach’s style of directing is able to draw out, yet this blurring of lines between fact and fiction has also unnerved some audiences, who have criticized his films about working-class struggles as political propaganda. Through insightful interviews with the filmmaker himself, Versus explores the challenges and impact of adopting the art of cinema as a mouthpiece of social justice.
