Synopsis

This sensitively made drama tells the story of Alex, a 15-year-old intersex person, who cannot be physically characterised as male or female but has been living as girl. Her parents have taken her from Argentina to a village in Uruguay by the sea to avoid the negative stigma of society. She is thrown into an identity crisis by a budding romance with Alvaro, the son of a surgeon her father has invited to visit to discuss the possibility of a gender reassignment operation. This slow-paced but emotionally intense film is a boldly confrontational and insightful window into growing up intersex.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
