This inspiring documentary sees six Leeds teens develop their talent for slam poetry – a dynamic, heartfelt and politicised form of creative expression that owes as much to the raw energy of hip-hop as to the written verse that’s traditionally been taught in schools. First-time directors Alex Ramseyer-Bache and Daniel Lucchesi follow the team as they prepare to take the stage at the world champs in Washington DC. We share the growing tension felt by the likeable young artists as their big moment draws near, from Maryam Alam, a 16-year-old Muslim determined to challenge stereotypes about her culture to Saju Ahmed, who narrowly avoided being kicked out of school but is now respected team captain.
