In a flashback, King Harold and Queen Lillian are about to sign the kingdom of Far Far Away over to Rumpelstiltskin in exchange for him curing their daughter Fiona’s ogre curse. Before doing so, news arrives that she has been saved by her “true love” and they cancel the deal, leaving Rumpelstiltskin angry and wishing that Shrek, her rescuer, had never been born. In the present day, Shrek has grown tired of his celebrity status and longs for his privacy. On his children’s first birthday, he becomes angry with Fiona and storms off into the forest, where he is followed and approached by Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek is offered the opportunity to experience a day as a ‘real ogre’ and gladly accepts, whisking him away into an alternate reality. In this dimension, Shrek initially begins to enjoy his new life until he discovers that, in this world, all is not well for Fiona, Puss, and Donkey. Even worse, Rumpelstiltskin reveals that he's tricked Shrek and when the day ends, Shrek will no longer exist. Shrek must recruit his old friends and together find a way to prevent Rumpelstiltskin’s new reality from taking over in this fourth and final film in the fairy tale series.
