Synopsis

At just 17, Ree Dolly is raising her younger brother and sister and making a great job of it, despite their living in poverty. Then her meth-manufacturer father skips bail and they'll lose their home unless he's found. "I'll find him" Ree vows, and begins a perilous journey through the unforgiving landscape of her remote backwoods home. Ree is a rare character, something like a western hero, with a quiet courage that enthralls. Hollywood would have you believe all teenagers care about is dating and having great hair; this brilliant film shows there's more to life, and adolescence, than that.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
