Synopsis

This sprawling epic follows the events leading up to the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 when French forces, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, were defeated by a coalition of Anglo-alliance and Prussian troops. The film begins with Napoleon (Rod Steiger) being exiled to Elba, only to escape and return triumphant to Paris less than a year later, where he persuades the army to back his plans to rule Europe by force. Matters come to a head in Belgium, where English commander the Duke of Wellington (Christopher Plummer) refuses to retreat and readies his troops for battle on the fields of Waterloo.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
