Synopsis

In late-13th-century Scotland, farmer William Wallace is spurred into action against the English occupation under King Edward "Longshanks". Despite being hindered by scheming Scottish nobility, he is soon leading a huge militia force in revolt, winning a crucial victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge, and pushes on for his country's freedom. Director and star Mel Gibson's rabble-rousing epic plays fast-and-loose with history, but its stunning battle sequences and the iconic portrayal of its leading character ensured a haul of Oscars in 1996, including Best Picture and Best Director.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
